Math Lab
March 6, 2025
The Math Lab is a space where High School students can learn and explore mathematical concepts, facts and theorems through a variety of activities using different techniques.
They can enjoy mathematics through informal exploration where anyone can generate problems and struggle to get an answer. It is a space to explore and design new mathematical activities and enrich mathematical learning. The main aim is the involvement of the mind and hand. Math Lab is not just a noun, it is more a verb where there will be more action and we go beyond the text.
Some activities done have included:
- The students of the class came dressed as Pythagoras. Students researched the history of Pi and looked into the various aspects of it – how the value of Pi can be determined, to its use in astronomy and rocket science. They shared their work in the form of plays and other activities. We had an enjoyable Pi Day.
- The combination of biology, chaos theory and mathematics was a great way to show mathematical patterns that were made so visual. The mathematical patterns of board games were looked into, including chess.
- Setting up a classroom escape room is a sure way to increase student engagement.
The escape room drew participants in by connecting puzzles and clues to a true adventure. - Making brighter spaces, the students made a few installations.
