Enterprise without Borders - Burgess Hill School link with Bangalore school through YE Company Programme

This event was organised by Jane King and Sateja Joshi, ably assisted by the Young Enterprise group at Mallya Aditi International School in Bangalore, Southern India. The aims of the day were to raise awareness of Enterprise Education and encourage more school to participate in Young Enterprise projects, which are run along similar lines to those in the UK. At present Mallya Aditi is the only school in Bangalore to offer students a Young Enterprise opportunity.

Five schools attended on the day and sent both students and teachers to hear the speakers and take part in the competition to find the best business ideas. The morning started in the outside amphitheatre, (fortunately the monsoon rains held off) where the whole school gathered to hear the introduction by the Principal, who welcomed everyone and added his support to the concept of Enterprise Education in school. This was followed by a presentation by Jane King about the contribution made by Enterprise projects in the developed and developing world, including examples from UK and Zambia.
Next up were the ‘Sparrow’ Young Enterprise group who launched their company to the whole school and showcased their range of products, including bird boxes and t shirts, which they hope will raise awareness and help their cause, which is to bring sparrows back to central Bangalore city.
The school then disbursed and the enterprise groups and visitors gathered in to hear presentations by successful entrepreneurs: The Vindya Company Chairman, 90% of whose employees are ‘differently abled’
George Eapen – Blue Ocean Strategy and Marketing

It was very encouraging to hear the questions posed by the students from all the different schools and they clearly learnt a lot.
Lunch was organised by the Mallya Aditi students and sponsored by Burgess Hill School. We were lucky enough to be joined by three of the school’s alumni, who spoke about their experiences as start-up entrepreneurs. The audience came away with no doubt whatsoever that starting a businesses is very hard, certainly not an easy option.
The afternoon was the highlight, as students presented their own business ideas. The brief was left very wide, so we had a great range of ideas, from those costing next to nothing, up to million dollar schemes.

After much deliberation, the eventual prize-winners were:
Best Business Idea - The Sparrow Company – Sparrow related products,
Best Environmentally Responsible Business Idea - Indus International Solar powered parking solution
Best Presentation - Rent-a-Pen solution for schools with proceeds to charity
Prizes were sponsored by Burgess Hill School, Mid Sussex District Council and Mid Sussex Young Enterprise.
The winners received trophies to display at school and book tokens for the ‘Landmark’ bookstore.
All in all, the event was a great success and we hope to repeat it next year.
